We believe the purpose of our nursery school is to provide:
1. A social environment that supports children's psycho-social development (inclusion/exclusion, power/vulnerability). 2. An emotional environment supportive, sympathetic, and loving for children beginning the process of separation. 3. A child-centered/child-led environment that recognizes and respects children's innate curiosity and creativity and provides a safe and supportive environment for children to take the physical, emotional, and cognitive risks that encourage their growth. Our purpose is reflected in the attitudes of adults toward children. At MBNS children are trusted and respected. We do not use shame, punishment, or extrinsic rewards as a means of control. Limit setting is based on developmentally appropriate expectations. At MBNS the adult's role is to support children in developing their own internal control. We offer tools such as non-violent conflict resolution, problem solving, and effective communication skills to facilitate psycho-social development. At MBNS the "whole child" is nurtured. Children are encouraged to show the full range of their emotions, just as they are encouraged to fully express themselves creatively, cognitively, and physically. Simply, children learn best when they are allowed freedom to control and explore their own environment. Each child's individuality is respected. As a community we agree to combat racism, homophobia, classism, ageism, bodyism, sexism, and religious and non-religious discrimination. Our program is based on the guidelines set forth by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the anti-bias curriculum developed at Pacific Oaks College. MBNS is a community that endeavors to support and nurture the growth of parents and children, at home and at school, offering a rich school environment for both adults and children complemented by ongoing parent education and support groups. Our philosophy is reflected in the writings of: |
